How to Get Dog Hair Off Everything
Couches, clothes, carpets and car seats: the tools that actually work.
If you love dogs, you live with dog hair. You can't stop it entirely, but you can stop it taking over.
Couches and upholstery
- Rubber glove trick: put on a dry rubber glove and sweep your hand over the fabric. Hair balls up and lifts off.
- Squeegee or rubber pet-hair brush: drag in short strokes, then vacuum the clumps.
- Vacuum upholstery tool: go slowly, against the nap.
- Use washable throws on your dog's favourite spot and wash them weekly.
Clothes
- Lint roller before you leave the house; keep one by the door and one in the car.
- Before washing, tumble clothes for 10 minutes on a no-heat dryer setting to loosen hair, then shake them out.
- Clean the washing machine filter and dryer lint screen often; hair builds up fast.
Carpets and floors
- Vacuum more often in shedding season, slowly, in two directions.
- A rubber broom pulls hair out of carpet surprisingly well.
- Hard floors: dry mop or vacuum before wet mopping, or you'll just move wet hair around.
Car seats
Pumice-style pet hair stones and rubber brushes work well on car upholstery. A seat cover you can throw in the wash is the long-term fix.
Cutting down the shedding
- Brush your dog regularly, outside if you can.
- Ask your vet if shedding seems excessive; diet and skin conditions can play a part.
- Wash their bedding regularly (see how to wash dog beds).
